Tips for Healthy Eyes in 2017

Each of us only gets one set of eyes, and if we are lucky the most extreme issues we will face with them is needing to wear glasses, or maybe some dry eye later in life. However, we don’t have to depend on luck! There are a number of things that each of us can resolve to do this year to help keep our eyes happy and healthy.

  • Don’t smoke! – We have written before about the harm that smoking can do to your eyes. A 2012 study also found “strong association between smoking and tear film instability”, and the smoker group had “significantly lower tear film break-up time”, which means that the tears are less able to properly moisten the eyes.
  • Wear quality sunglasses – Wearing sunglasses protects the eyes from harmful UV rays, which may be more harmful to children than adults. They are also a great way to prevent airborne particles such as dust and sand from entering the eyes.
  • Eat for healthy eyes – According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, eating foods rich in vitamin C and E, zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, and other nutrients have been linked to lower risks of cataracts, dry eye syndrome, and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). A regimen on nutritional supplements may even be able to slow down the progression of AMD!

Your eyes are your window to the world, so be sure to take these simple steps to keep them wide open and working well.
